Our Leader, dr hab. Sebastian Glatt, among the newest members of EMBO!

In celebration of its 60th anniversary, EMBO has elected 100 new Members and 20 Associate Members, acknowledging their exceptional contributions to life sciences research.

Dr. hab. Sebastian Glatt from the Max Planck Research Group at the Małopolska Centre of Biotechnology, Jagiellonian University, is among the 120 esteemed scientists newly elected to the EMBO Membership. This honor highlights his significant achievements in the life sciences, particularly in the area of structural biology and translation regulation research.

EMBO Director Fiona Watt commented, „The new EMBO Members and Associate Members have made immense contributions to fundamental life science research. Their work has often paved the way for innovations that have enhanced lives globally. As we celebrate EMBO’s 60th anniversary, we recognize the pivotal roles played by the EMBO Membership in advancing international life science research and supporting EMBO’s programs and activities. I extend my warmest congratulations to all those elected.”

In recognition of this milestone year, the EMBO Council invited the membership to elect 100 new Members and 20 Associate Members. The new members hail from 37 countries/territories, with the 100 new EMBO Members based in 24 EMBC member states, and the 20 new Associate Members residing in 13 countries/territories, including EMBO’s global cooperation partners.

The EMBO Membership, which began in 1964 with 169 life scientists, has now grown to a community of over 2,100 Members and Associate Members, including 92 Nobel laureates. These members guide EMBO’s programs and activities by evaluating funding applications, serving on committees, and contributing to initiatives such as training, policy, outreach, and mentorship. New members are nominated and elected by the existing EMBO Membership.

EMBO will formally welcome the new members at a community meeting from October 29 to November 1, 2024, in Heidelberg, Germany.
